Education
Read for the Environment is our biggest program, but Environmental Education is part of all our activities at Keep Carbondale Beautiful and we appreciate opportunities to present information to the public. KCB will provide a guest speaker for any classroom, club meeting or community meeting. If interested, please contact KCB.
Keep America Beautiful provides programming to help future generations become more aware of environmental concerns and become engaged in strategic action to change behavior. Educators can go here for more information.
Keep Carbondale Beautiful participates in the following environmental education opportunities:
- Crab Orchard Earth Day Celebration in April
- SIUC Earth Awareness Exhibit
- Conservation Fair in DuQuoin in Sept/Oct
- ArborWild at Evergreen Park in June
And Keep Carbondale Beautiful organizes the Read for the Environment program:
Read for the Environment
Presentations are given to 1st-3rd grade classrooms within Carbondale’s school districts, during the school day. Volunteers read an environmental children’s story, engage students in discussion, and distribute take-home materials for children (coloring books, pencils, crayons, etc). Training sessions are held in the SIU Student Center in advance of the classroom visits.
Anyone interested in volunteering, please contact Keep Carbondale Beautiful. Send in suggestions for good books to read!
2019 we read A Log's Life.
2017 we read The Berenstain Bears Don't Pollute Anymore; The Great Trash Bash; and The Wartville Wizard.
2016-17 we read stories about WATER: The Water Princess; All the Water in the World; Water Rolls, Water Rises. We talked up the Smithsonian water exhibit (Dec 10, 2016 - Jan 21, 2017).
2015-16 we read Rosie Revere, Engineer: at all CCHS district schools - grades 1, 2, and 3.
There are so many things around our homes that we only ever use ONCE.
It's always good to recycle anything that we can instead of throwing it in the trash(BOO).
But its even better when we can find another use for something.
First though, what even IS trash?
Also known as garbage, refuse or waste, trash is a big problem that we can all help to fix in our own little ways.
It starts with YOU and it can start in your own home!

How do I Reduce?
- Reducing can be done in so many different ways. Everyone should be able to find a few ways that they can Reduce in their everyday lives.
- You can Reduce the amount of waste you put into the trash just by recycling some things you might have thrown away.
- Be sure to check with your parents to see what kinds of things you can Recycle where you live.
- Most places let you Recycle Glass(like jars and bottles), Aluminum(like cans of soup or soda), certain types of Plastic, and even Cardboard and Paper.
- You can even Recycle FOOD! But don't put it out on the curb with your other Recycling, this type of Recycling can be done in your own back yard.
- It's called Composting, and it's when you put old food scraps(like apple cores and banana peels) and yard trimmings(grass and leaves) in a pile.
- Over time, microscopic organisms will eat away all that stuff in your pile and they leave behind nutrient rich soil that we can use to grow plants!
- Be sure to do this outside though AND with your parents permission, it can get messy and stinky.
